Scientists have developed a small robotic fish that is programmed to he removes microplastics from the sea.

What the fish should be able to do

The Robot Fish is able to heal itself when damaged. It is only 13 millimeters long and has a light laser system in its tail. He swims almost 30 millimeters per second , about the same speed as Plankton. The bionic robotic fish can thus adsorb the microplastic.

The artificial bionic fish is very flexible, easy to twist and Weight up to 5 kg

move. “After the robot has collected the microplastics, the researchers can analyze the components more closely and determine the physiological toxicity of the material,” says researcher Wang.

Currently only works on the surface

The material of the fish can regenerate and also heal itself. This is important because injuries can always occur, for example from anglers. So far, however, the robot fish is only available as “Proof of Concept” and more research is needed to make the product in the “real world,” they say.

Currently the fish would be mainly on the Surface of bodies of water work well, but not at depth. However, Wang explains that the research project should also inspire other researchers to use nanotechnology to combat microplastics.
